ADIONG: VP SARA’S IMPEACHMENT TO DEFINE LEADERSHIP STANDARDS FOR 2028

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will serve as a critical benchmark for the country’s political future ahead of the 2028 presidential elections, according to a House leader.

Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong, who serves as the spokesperson for the House prosecution panel, stated in a television interview that the proceedings transcend individual political figures and will instead establish necessary standards for the nation’s highest offices.

“It will set the trend for others, especially malapit na ang 2028 presidential election,” Adiong said.

It will set the trend for others, especially since the 2028 presidential election is fast approaching.

The lawmaker emphasized that the process will clarify the conduct expected of national leaders.

“It will set the parameter. Magkakaroon ng at least definition on how a president should act, should behave that is consummated to the office and to give justice to the office,” he said.

It will set the parameter. There will be, at least, a definition on how a president should act, should behave that is appropriate to the office and to give justice to the office.

Expressing confidence in the “overwhelming” evidence compiled against the Vice President, Adiong maintained that the trial must proceed to its logical conclusion, even if Duterte decides to step down to avoid prosecution. He argued that a resignation should not serve as an escape hatch from legal accountability.

“It’s not only the removal of office. If you remove her, it will not condone the charges. It will not condone the violations just simply by resigning,” Adiong stressed.

Adiong dismissed notions that the trial is fueled by partisan animosity, asserting that the proceedings are aimed at upholding the rule of law and laying out the facts before both the public and the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.

He urged the public to let constitutional checks and balances function properly despite the heightened political climate.
