Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala proved her mettle on the red clay Wednesday, delivering a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory over Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Round of 128 at the WTA1000 Madrid Open.
The 20-year-old Filipina, currently ranked World No. 44, entered the tournament seeking redemption following a premature exit at the Stuttgart Open.
Her tenacity was on full display as she dismantled the veteran Russian in straight sets to secure her spot in the next stage of the prestigious tournament.
A Tactical Turnaround
The match began with Pavlyuchenkova, 34, showing early aggression to seize a 2–1 lead.
However, Eala remained unfazed, showcasing her defensive range and counter-punching ability to claim the next two games and shift the momentum in her favor.
The tide turned further when the Russian veteran, currently ranked No. 116, was forced to call for a medical timeout. Sensing an opening, Eala intensified her pressure, winning three of the following four games.
She eventually closed out the first set after Pavlyuchenkova committed a costly double fault in the ninth game.
Closing with Authority
Eala maintained her stride in the second set, racing to a 3–1 advantage. While Pavlyuchenkova managed to hold serve and briefly stall Eala’s progress, the Filipina “ace” responded by sweeping two consecutive games to put herself on the brink of victory at 5–2.
Pavlyuchenkova offered a final spark of resistance in the eighth game, utilizing two powerful aces to stay alive.
However, the comeback was short-lived. In the final game, Eala mirrored that power, firing a blistering serve that the Russian could not return, sealing the straight-sets sweep.
