MANILA, Philippines — The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) clarified on Wednesday that an extension regarding its 24-hour compliance order was issued exclusively to Reddit, excluding Discord from the adjustment.
According to the CICC, Reddit secured the deadline extension following a prompt virtual meeting where representatives pledged specific actions to improve child protection protocols across the country.
“Reddit was granted an extension after its officials met with CICC online within the prescribed 24-hour period and engaged with the agency on specific commitments that the Philippines urgently needs to strengthen online child safety,” the CICC said in a statement.
While Discord submitted a formal letter outlining its current safety features for teenage users, the agency emphasized that the platform has not been granted similar leniency.
“No extension has been granted to Discord at this time, pending direct discussions with the platform and concrete commitments to meet the agency’s requirements,” the agency stated.
This statement corrects an earlier announcement indicating that both social platforms had received extra time to comply with orders requiring them to set up physical offices within the Philippines.
The mandate stems from heightened government scrutiny over online extremist networks, particularly those linked to nihilistic violent extremism (NVE).
Local law enforcement has connected these digital spaces to the online grooming and radicalization of underage youth involved in recent school violence incidents across the nation.
