The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is finalizing its comprehensive investigation report regarding the June 8 drowning deaths of two college basketball players in Aurora.
As part of the ongoing case build-up, CIDG operatives traveled to Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, to secure the official sworn statement of the mother of one of the victims, Rene Clert Baterbonia.
She was accompanied by her legal counsel during the proceedings on Thursday, June 25.
Authorities indicated that criminal complaints may be filed against 10 to 11 individuals, with investigators examining potential criminal negligence and violations of the Anti-Hazing Act.
“The statement is now being consolidated, processed, and integrated as part of vital documentary evidence for the referral of criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ),” the CIDG said in a statement.
CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico emphasized that sending investigators to gather additional testimonies highlights the agency’s commitment to an exhaustive inquiry.
“The CIDG assures the family and the public that it is handling the active case with absolute thoroughness, transparency, and urgency to ensure that accountability is established and justice is properly served,” Morico said.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that the police are working closely with the Department of Justice to ensure a swift review of evidence and case records once the investigation is formally endorsed.
“We assure the families that the investigation was conducted thoroughly, objectively, and based on evidence. We will submit our findings and recommendations to the Department of Justice, and we will pursue the truth wherever it leads,” Nartatez said.
“No one will be exempt from accountability if the evidence establishes responsibility,” he added.
