The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Thursday, August 27, that it is closely monitoring the impact of severe flash floods in northern Nepal while verifying reports of a missing Filipino tourist.
Coordinates are currently being handled by the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi, which holds jurisdiction over Nepal, alongside the Philippine Honorary Consulate General in Kathmandu to assess the situation and deliver emergency aid to affected citizens.
The verification effort follows statements from the Nepal Tourism Board listing a Filipino traveler among those unaccounted for after torrents of mud, debris, and floodwaters swept through areas near the Nepal-China border, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced across the Himalayan region.
The DFA assured the public that diplomatic posts are actively collaborating with local officials on the ground.
“The Embassy and the Consulate General are coordinating with Nepali authorities to determine whether there are affected Philippine nationals and provide emergency rescue or assistance,” the DFA stated.
There are approximately 128 Filipinos residing in Nepal, composed primarily of women married to Nepali nationals.
