DUTERTE WAIVES ATTENDANCE FOR FIFTH ICC STATUS CONFERENCE AHEAD OF TRIAL

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has formally waived his right to attend the upcoming fifth status conference at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on November 2, leaving his legal counsel to handle procedural discussions on his behalf.

According to an October 30 filing, Duterte’s defense team submitted a signed waiver after being directed by the Trial Chamber to place the document on record. The defense previously informed the chamber on October 28 of Duterte’s desire to skip the hearing, a request that judges approved the following day.

Within the signed document, Duterte instructed his attorneys to tackle the procedural items outlined on the status conference agenda, alongside any other issues that might surface during the proceedings.

Although Duterte was present for the two preceding status conferences, he will skip this session as preparations finalize for his trial, which is scheduled to commence on November 30.

The legal proceedings stem from allegations brought by the ICC prosecution accusing Duterte of individual criminal responsibility for crimes against humanity of murder, connected to killings during his administration’s signature anti-drug campaign.

While prosecutors allege the killings formed part of an organized policy to target and neutralize suspected criminals through violent means, Duterte has consistently denied all allegations through his defense counsel.

Ahead of the trial, the Trial Chamber has actively managed pretrial responsibilities, overseeing the disclosure and presentation of evidence, witness testimonies, and logistical setups for the court.
