ERICE SUGGESTS ROXAS AS POSSIBLE 2028 OPPOSITION BET IF ROBREDO SITS OUT

Caloocan City 2nd District Representative Egay Erice is floating the possibility of a political comeback for former Interior Secretary and Senator Mar Roxas, suggesting him as a viable alternative for the traditional opposition in the 2028 presidential race should former Vice President Leni Robredo opt out.

In a recent interview, Erice emphasized that Roxas still possesses the essential qualities required of a Philippine leader.

He proposed a “reset” for the seasoned politician, who has remained away from the limelight since his unsuccessful 2019 senatorial bid.

“Baka puwedeng i-reset… Nandiyan pa naman si Mar Roxas, kung ayaw ni [former] VP Leni… Bakit hindi natin ibalik ‘yung suwerte?” Erice remarked.

Despite Roxas’ previous electoral losses—first to Jejomar Binay in the 2010 vice presidential race and later to Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 presidential elections—Erice believes that his dedication to the country remains steadfast.

“Para bang ni-reject siya ng mga Pilipino… Pero mahal niya ‘yung bayan… Palagay ko, mayroong pagmamahal sa puso niya na hindi niya maiiwanan ‘yung Pilipinas,” the lawmaker added.

Roxas initially entered politics in 1993, filling the seat vacated by his late brother, Dinggoy Roxas. After decades in public service, he stepped back from the arena following the 2019 midterm elections.

The suggestion comes as Leni Robredo, Roxas’ 2016 running mate, maintains her stance against returning to national politics.

Currently serving as the Mayor of Naga City, Robredo has expressed her intention to seek a second term in her local post rather than pursuing the presidency in 2028.
