The European Union (EU) has released €150,000 (approximately ₱10.9 million) in emergency aid to support Philippine communities recovering from severe, monsoon-driven inundations across Luzon.
According to the EU Delegation to the Philippines, the emergency grant aims to assist more than 32,000 individuals in heavily impacted regions, including Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and the Ilocos Region.
Disbursed through the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), the aid will fund the distribution of crucial non-food items such as hygiene kits, clean water storage containers, and sleeping sets to affected households.
The relief operation also encompasses hot meal distributions and clean drinking water access for evacuees, alongside the deployment of mobile health units. These medical teams will conduct consultations, dispense vital medications, offer psychological support, and manage disease surveillance to curb vector-borne and water-borne outbreaks.
Monsoon rains intensified by successive tropical weather systems since early August triggered widespread flooding and landslides throughout low-lying, coastal, and mountainous zones.
“By 14 September, more than 10.5 million people had been affected across 11 regions, with more than 120,100 people being displaced in over 500 evacuation centres. More than 4,500 homes have so far been damaged. A total of 188 cities have been declared under a state of calamity,” the EU stated.
This latest allocation flows through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), supplementing more than €2 million in humanitarian funding already remitted by the EU to local partners in 2026.
The EU remains a major contributor to the IFRC’s global DREF network under a broader €16-million delegation agreement to ensure rapid disaster response.
