Host school Far Eastern University (FEU) kicked off UAAP Season 89 with a vibrant “Super Unkaboga-Bowl” opening ceremony on Saturday, September 12, at the packed Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Morayta-based university delivered on its promise of an extraordinary launch, headlined by FEU alumni Vice Ganda and rapper Gloc-9. The pair electrified the green-and-gold-clad crowd alongside featured performers Bini Maloi and Mikha, Maki, Darren Espanto, Kyle Echarri, and the Baby Dolls.
During the show, Vice Ganda and Gloc-9 shared inspiring messages with the youth and debuted the season’s official anthem, “Dito Sa Amin.”
Gloc-9 also performed a medley of his popular tracks, including “Simpleng Tao,” “Wag Kang Matakot Sumayaw,” “Bagsakan,” and “Upuan,” accompanied by dynamic light displays honoring each participating university’s team colors.
Before the stage performances, student-athletes, coaching staff, and league executives participated in the traditional parade of schools.
Under this year’s theme, “For Everyone, UAAP,” the eight member institutions also honored key figures who made significant contributions to their respective communities.
UAAP Season 89 Chairman Johnny Montinola highlighted the competitive and educational values of the collegiate league during the ceremony.
”As you know, the universities are vying for 60 events, and each school is a defending champion. Finalists also aspire to take the next step, while contenders are looking to barge into the Final Four,” Montinola said.
”These are exciting events, but do know that the league is also about student development and formation through sportsmanship, fair competition, pathways for career opportunities, and opportunities to represent the country,” he added.
Following the opening festivities, the basketball tournament officially begins with a triple-header featuring host FEU, runner-up University of the Philippines, and defending champion De La Salle University.
