Acting Senate President Win Gatchalian has called for an immediate and well-coordinated government mobilization after a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani, triggering tsunami alerts and causing fatalities and widespread infrastructure damage.
In an official statement, Gatchalian expressed deep concern over the scale of the disaster, stressing that national and local government agencies must act swiftly to manage the crisis.
“The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani Province is deeply concerning, particularly given initial reports of damaged structures, a tsunami warning, and disrupted utility services across Mindanao,” he said.
The lawmaker pressed disaster management and emergency response teams to deploy rescue and relief operations to the hardest-hit communities without delay. He emphasized that the state’s immediate priority must focus on restoring access to basic necessities and critical emergency services.
Furthermore, Gatchalian raised concerns regarding the earthquake’s impact on the education sector, given the recent resumption of classes in several regions.
He directed education officials to put the safety of school communities first.
“I also urge the Department of Education to prioritize the safety of teachers and learners. Immediate steps must include assessing the structural integrity of school buildings, providing psychosocial support, and implementing appropriate localized measures to ensure learning continuity,” he added.
Concluding his statement, the senator reiterated the urgency of delivering swift aid to victims and ensuring affected areas are fully supported as long-term recovery efforts begin.
“Our priority must be to save lives and ensure that affected communities have immediate access to safe shelter, food, and medical care,” Gatchalian concluded.
