The southwest monsoon, or Habagat, is expected to maintain its influence over parts of Luzon and the western portion of Visayas, bringing more rain to several areas, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Monday, August 10.
PAGASA forecast monsoon rains over Benguet, Zambales and Bataan, while intermittent Habagat-induced rains may affect Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro.
Western Visayas, the remaining areas of Cagayan Valley, CALABARZON and MIMAROPA, along with Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur, may experience overcast conditions accompanied by scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the monsoon.
Elsewhere, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are expected, mainly as a result of localized thunderstorms.
In Weather Advisory No. 34 issued at 5 a.m. Monday, the state weather bureau warned that continued Habagat activity could produce substantial rainfall across several locations.
For Monday, rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters could be recorded in Benguet, while Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro may receive between 100 and 200 mm.
Rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 mm is also possible over Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, Pangasinan, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna and Oriental Mindoro.
PAGASA noted that rainfall totals could be higher in mountainous and elevated locations. It also warned that accumulated rainfall from previous weather disturbances could intensify the effects of the ongoing rains.
On Tuesday, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro could see 100 to 200 mm of rain, while Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Batangas and Oriental Mindoro may receive 50 to 100 mm.
For Wednesday, August 12, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro are forecast to get between 50 and 100 mm of rainfall.
PAGASA urged local disaster risk reduction and management authorities to implement appropriate measures to safeguard communities and minimize potential damage to property.
