IMEE WARNS US OPERATION IN VENEZUELA MAY UNDERMINE GLOBAL NORMS

Senator Imee Marcos on Sunday warned that the United States’ military operation in Venezuela, which captured President Nicolás Maduro, could heighten global unease over how powerful nations treat strategically important states while bypassing international norms.

“The situation in Venezuela underscores long-standing concerns regarding the role of major powers in the internal affairs of states they consider strategically important,” Marcos said.

The US disclosed the overnight operation, announced by President Donald Trump on social media, while Venezuelan authorities accused American forces of striking civilian and military sites amid explosions in Caracas.

Marcos cited Washington’s history of intervention in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Panama, Nicaragua, and the Philippines, noting that such actions continue to shape perceptions of US power.

She cautioned that removing a sitting head of state raises serious legal and ethical issues.

“The removal or extraction of a foreign leader from his home country may raise serious questions under international law,” she said.

Marcos added, “(It) could send troubling signals to the international community, potentially reinforcing perceptions that power, rather than rules, determines outcomes in global affairs.”
