Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson clarified on Saturday that Senator Loren Legarda traveled abroad to undergo medical evaluations for a lung condition, shedding light on the cause of her extended absence from legislative duties.
In a radio interview, Lacson shared that Legarda personally reached out to him before her departure to inform him that doctors detected an issue with her lungs.
He expressed complete trust in her explanation following their direct conversation regarding her health status.
Lacson noted that Legarda turned emotional as they discussed the preliminary probe being conducted by the Office of the Ombudsman.
“Importante yung health mo,” Lacson recalled telling Legarda.
The Ombudsman’s investigation into Legarda and her son, Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste, has fueled public interest surrounding her prolonged medical leave.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla previously confirmed a preliminary inquiry into allegations connecting Legarda and Leviste to exclusive franchises and contracts for unfulfilled solar projects—claims Legarda has firmly rejected.
Although Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano earlier labeled the timing of her extended leave as “suspicious,” Lacson maintained that his exchange with Legarda convinced him that her medical emergency is genuine.
Addressing speculation that Legarda might remain overseas or seek political asylum, Lacson refuted the claims and assured the public that Legarda promised to return to the country once her medical tests are complete.
He extended his well wishes for her health assessment and recovery as her checkup continues.
