Senator Loren Legarda and her son, Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Leviste, have submitted their counter-affidavits in the Office of the Ombudsman’s investigation into alleged ₱10-billion “ghost” solar projects.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla said Friday that although the lawmakers filed their counter-affidavits beyond the prescribed deadline, investigators will still consider their submissions as part of the proceedings to ensure that due process is observed.
“We’re not going to get them on any technicality; we will still consider the counter-affidavit,” Remulla said during a press briefing.
Legarda and Leviste had earlier been placed under preliminary investigation by the Ombudsman over allegations of graft and plunder linked to the disputed solar projects.
The Ombudsman chief said investigators could still seek additional information or clarification from the two lawmakers, although reaching them may prove difficult.
“Para due process, walang masasabi. We’re considering it. Pag-aaralan namin ang kanilang counter-affidavit, pero ang problema, paano ‘yan kung may questions kami? Nasaan sila?”
Remulla said authorities believe Legarda and Leviste remain in Paris after previously traveling to Switzerland.
Legarda has been on extended medical leave since August 3, reportedly because of a serious lung condition.
