LTFRB EXPEDITES BUS PERMITS TO PREPARE FOR UNDAS PASSENGER RUSH

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has fast-tracked the evaluation of special permit applications for public utility buses ahead of the expected surge in commuters traveling for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

The agency is currently processing 356 applications covering a total of 1,003 passenger buses. The requested routes span nationwide destinations, primarily connecting regional provinces with major urban hubs like Metro Manila.

“We are reviewing all the data that we have to determine the appropriate number of passenger buses that will be given special permits. The goal has always been to have a sufficient number of buses as a huge number of our kababayan go to their home provinces to honor their departed loved ones,” said acting LTFRB Chairman Atty. Greg Pua, Jr.

The board anticipates higher passenger numbers this year compared to last year, when 847 special permits were issued to transport companies.

Pua emphasized that approvals remain subject to stringent checks regarding vehicle roadworthiness to protect passengers and other motorists.

He noted that permit conditions require transport firms to verify that drivers are fit to operate their vehicles, warning that operators will be held accountable if their drivers engage in reckless behavior.

“Part of the approval process is the strict instruction to the bus companies and transport operators to ensure the mental and physical readiness of their drivers,” Pua stated.

In addition, regional offices have been directed to inspect bus terminals to guarantee that operators meet mandatory passenger facility standards, following penalties imposed on several terminal owners last year for maintaining rundown premises.

“We ask the operators to just comply with the commitment they made when they applied not only for special permits but also for operation of terminals. This is a way of respecting and giving back for the trust and confidence of your passengers,” Pua added.
