MANILA, Philippines — The Malacañang Complex was placed under heightened security and lockdown measures on Monday, September 21, as various activist groups were set to conduct mass demonstrations to mark the anniversary of the declaration of martial law.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) confirmed the closure of the New Executive Building (NEB), which accommodates various government offices, citing “standard security protocols”.
In tandem with the advisory, the Presidential Action Center temporarily halted its operations to ensure the safety of employees and visitors within the compound.
“Access to roads and gates leading to the Palace will also be restricted due to heightened security measures. These restrictions are part of the standard operating procedures implemented at this alert level,” the PCO said.
Despite the compound lockdown and restricted physical access, Malacañang clarified that government operations will remain active through alternative work-from-home arrangements for Palace personnel.
Palace officials also issued an appeal to rally leaders and participants to maintain peace and order throughout the demonstrations, reassuring the public that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains receptive to hearing the issues raised by protesters.
Prior to the heightened security measures, the Manila City government ordered the suspension of in-person classes across all levels, acting on security recommendations from local police authorities ahead of the expected rallies.
