National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag has dismissed online claims linking him to a multimillion-dollar property in California, calling the allegations recycled lies meant to tarnish his credibility.
Speaking on Friday, Matibag pointed out that the false claims re-emerged shortly after his July 21–22 testimony in the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, suggesting the timing was a calculated attempt at character assassination.
The controversy stems from online real estate records for a house on Baldwin Place listed under the names “Melvin Matibag” and “Anna Marie Matibag.” However, official records show that the NBI director’s wife is legally named Ma. Rene Ann Lourdes Garcia Matibag, contradicting the names on the property listing.
Political commentator Jesus Falcis also came to Matibag’s defense, clarifying that the California home belongs to a different Filipino immigrant who shares the same name but has a distinct middle initial.
Falcis noted that the coordinated attack appears intended to undermine Matibag following his key testimony on Article IV of the impeachment complaint, which involves alleged grave threats made by Vice President Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
