MERALCO CLARIFIES STAND ON SOLAR PANEL REGULATION AMID CRITICISM

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has addressed public backlash regarding its call for stricter solar panel oversight, asserting that its primary focus is grid safety and standardization rather than blocking the transition to renewable energy.

The utility firm, led by tycoon Manny Pangilinan, issued the clarification following online criticism that labeled its recent statements as an attempt to stifle competition from residential solar power systems.

Meralco emphasized that as a distribution utility, it does not hold regulatory power but seeks “proper coordination” to manage the electrical grid effectively.

Safety Over Restriction

Meralco explained that unauthorized or “guerilla” installations—systems set up without local government permits or utility notification—pose significant risks to both the household and the technical personnel maintaining the power lines.

“Our intention has never been to discourage innovation or limit personal energy choices, but rather to emphasize the importance of safety and proper installation.”

The company noted that when solar systems are integrated into the home’s wiring without the utility’s knowledge, it complicates emergency response efforts and potential grid feedback issues.

Call for Standardization

Meralco pointed out that its request for transparency aligns with international protocols, where renewable energy integration is governed by strict technical requirements to ensure a stable energy flow.

“Our request is simply for customers to inform their respective utility, whether Meralco or the distribution utility/electric cooperative in their area.”

By fostering open communication, the utility aims to bridge the gap between consumer desire for energy independence and the technical necessity of a regulated power infrastructure.
