Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. affirmed the law enforcement agency’s commitment to objective, non-partisan, and fair public service following Vice President Sara Duterte’s public statements expressing skepticism toward law enforcement and anxiety regarding her personal safety.
Addressing these statements, Nartatez emphasized that police personnel operate under a mandate to enforce court mandates, safeguard citizens irrespective of political leanings, and uphold professional standards across all operations.
“The Philippine National Police remains steadfastly committed to the rule of law, ensuring that all our operations are conducted with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and absolute respect for individual rights without fear or favor,” Nartatez stated.
Duterte previously expressed apprehension over her and her family’s safety, stating she lacked confidence in both the police force and the judiciary.
In response, Nartatez underlined that the PNP’s duty to maintain peace and order applies universally to all citizens regardless of status or political office. He noted that earning public trust requires consistent adherence to integrity and established protocols.
“Rebuilding trust is a continuous process of demonstrating our integrity through our actions, and we assure the public and our leaders that the PNP stands ready to protect every Filipino fairly and professionally,” Nartatez added.
Nartatez instructed relevant police offices to maintain security assessments and monitoring for the Vice President and her immediate family.
He also invited Duterte or her representatives to provide formal documentation or evidence regarding suspected threats so authorities can evaluate and verify them.
