The Nigerian Embassy in Manila has announced it is assisting the family of late student-athlete Chukwuemeka Divine Adili, who requested an autopsy before his remains are repatriated to Nigeria.
According to an official statement, the embassy is providing comprehensive consular assistance to coordinate the medical procedure with Philippine authorities and all involved parties.
Adili, a basketball player for Ateneo de Manila University, tragically drowned on June 8 during a team-building event in Dipaculao, Aurora. He and two other student-athletes were reportedly caught in a powerful ocean current.
The incident also claimed the life of 19-year-old Rene Clert Baterbonia, while the third athlete survived.
The diplomatic mission confirmed it is working closely with Adili’s family, Ateneo university officials, and local law enforcement to manage both the autopsy and the eventual return of his body. The embassy also extended its deepest condolences to the families of both Adili and Baterbonia.
While local authorities have launched an investigation into the tragedy, the embassy emphasized that no official findings currently indicate foul play.
In light of the incident’s high visibility, the embassy urged the Nigerian community to stay calm and avoid spreading rumors.
”The diplomatic mission added that it will continue monitoring developments closely while ensuring that necessary assistance and support are provided to its citizens throughout the process.”
