NO FILIPINOS HARMED IN VIOLENT NATIONWIDE COST-OF-LIVING PROTESTS IN FRANCE, SAYS DFA

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Monday, October 19, that no Filipino citizens have been reported hurt or involved in the violent nationwide demonstrations sweeping France over escalating living costs.

According to DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel, diplomatic posts monitoring the situation have verified the safety of the Filipino community in the European nation.

“Per the latest reports from the Philippine Embassy in Paris and the Philippine Consulate General in Milan, no Filipinos have been reported to be involved or harmed in the protests,” Ratonel said in an official statement.

The unrest escalated over the weekend as demonstrations turned destructive, drawing sharp condemnation from French President Emmanuel Macron.

Vowing a resolute government response against those behind the looting and vandalism, Macron announced plans to collaborate with local mayors to beef up security around cities, public spaces, and affected commercial establishments, alongside extending assistance to damaged businesses.

Facing criticism over alleged intelligence and security lapses, Macron also committed to full transparency regarding the police response and ordered a comprehensive review of how authorities anticipate and manage public demonstrations.

Data from the French Interior Ministry revealed that nearly 2,400 individuals were taken into custody during Saturday’s rallies, while close to 1,000 law enforcement officers and gendarmes sustained injuries in the line of duty.
