PAGASA MAY DECLARE AMIHAN SEASON SOON DESPITE WARMER EL NIÑO CONDITIONS

MANILA, Philippines — State weather bureau PAGASA announced on Tuesday, October 27, that the official start of the Amihan or Northeast Monsoon season could be declared either later this week or by early next week.

In a televised interview, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja noted that northeasterly wind flows from East Asia are currently descending toward Luzon, paving the way for the seasonal transition.

”Given the fact na posible tayong magdeklara na po ng pagsisimula ng Amihan by later this week or early next week, then mapapalitan na po ‘yung northeast windflow eventually nitong northeast monsoon,” Estareja said.

According to Estareja, the formal declaration is projected to be released between late October and early November. However, he cautioned that ongoing El Niño conditions will influence the upcoming monsoon, resulting in a milder and less cold season than usual.

While residents in many areas of Luzon and the Visayas can still expect chilly early mornings, temperatures are anticipated to rise significantly by midday. The current El Niño phenomenon, projected to be notable for its intense heat, is forecasted to persist through the first half of 2027.
