A low-pressure area (LPA) has developed from cloud formations tracked outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and could develop into a tropical depression within the next few days, the state weather bureau reported on Tuesday, July 21.
Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted that the disturbance, designated as LPA 07d, currently holds a moderate chance of becoming a tropical cyclone, with the likelihood anticipated to grow after 24 hours.
If the system intensifies into a tropical cyclone once inside the country’s tracking zone, PAGASA will assign it the local name “Kiyapo.”
As of 8:00 AM on Tuesday, the center of the LPA was estimated at 1,635 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon.
Weather forecasters project that the disturbance could cross into the PAR by Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday morning, July 22.
Torres indicated that as the weather system enters PAR and approaches the landmass, it may bring rains to broad sections of the country.
PAGASA clarified that the LPA is currently not directly impacting any region of the Philippines.
