Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan cleared the air regarding ongoing leadership rumors, stating he has no interest in becoming the next Senate President ahead of a highly anticipated session on Monday, May 18, where a leadership coup is reportedly brewing.
Taking to his social media accounts, Pangilinan addressed speculations that Malacañang is pushing for his installation as the top leader of the upper chamber before the Senate convenes for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday. The lawmaker stressed that he is instead prepared to collaborate with whoever assumes the Senate leadership to advance his core advocacy of food security.
“Hindi po tayo interesado sa pagiging Senate President. Tutulong nalang ako sa kanila. Para sa akin, mas importante ang Food Security kaysa sa Senate Presidency,” the lawmaker said.
Multiple Contenders Emerge
The Senate leadership is facing deep fragmentation, with several names surfacing as potential replacements for current Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano.
Aside from Pangilinan, political circles indicate a possible return to the helm for either Senate Minority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III or Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri. Meanwhile, Senator Win Gatchalian has also reportedly expressed interest in the chamber’s highest post.
Growing Discontent in the Upper House
The sudden push for a leadership change stems from growing dissatisfaction among several senators regarding the recent string of controversies rocking the institution.
Tensions in the upper house have reached a boiling point following a series of highly disruptive events under Cayetano’s watch. These include the enforcement of an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant of arrest against Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, a shocking shooting incident inside the Senate premises on Wednesday, May 13, and escalating frustration over Cayetano’s overall handling of the chamber’s affairs.
