Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has called on the newly formed Senate minority bloc to emulate Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, whose sudden attendance broke a two-day legislative stalemate and allowed the chamber to establish a quorum for its leadership reorganization.
As disputes over Senate leadership remain unresolved, Pangilinan stressed the urgency of moving past the political standoff to focus on the country’s legislative needs.
“So, we hope that we will all follow, sundin nalang yung ginawa po ni Senator Chiz Escudero who put the institution first,” he said in a television interview.
The statement comes amid lingering tensions after Senator Win Gatchalian was elected as Senate President Pro Tempore. The election was made possible only after Escudero’s unexpected appearance provided the minimum number of lawmakers required to legally conduct official business.
“Sana sumunod na sila para magkaroon na tayo ng pagkakataong magtrabaho na ng maayos,” Pangilinan said.
“Our people deserve better from the senators,” he added.
Meanwhile, during a Blue Ribbon Committee hearing held by his faction, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano maintained that he remains the upper chamber’s rightful leader.
Cayetano stated he would only step down if Gatchalian’s camp manages to secure an additional vote from his faction, reaching the 13-vote threshold needed to officially unseat him.
