Filipino families are set to receive a substantial financial reprieve following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s approval of a major expansion to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) maternity packages.
Starting April 30, the state insurer will implement a sweeping increase in coverage rates designed to minimize, if not eliminate, the cost of childbirth and maternal care.
Under the new guidelines, the financial assistance for normal spontaneous deliveries will triple to ₱29,000, while the benefit for cesarean section procedures will jump to as much as ₱62,000.
The President emphasized that these adjustments specifically target the high costs often associated with private healthcare facilities.
“Sa maraming pagkakataon… maaaring wala nang babayaran paglabas,”
Marcos stated, highlighting that the expanded rates are intended to cover enough expenses that patients admitted to hospital wards could potentially face zero out-of-pocket charges upon discharge.
The enhanced package adopts a more holistic approach to maternal health, covering the entire cycle from conception to recovery. Prenatal support has been significantly bolstered, with the number of covered consultations doubling from four to eight visits.
The comprehensive benefit also integrates essential vaccines, laboratory tests, and three mandatory postnatal follow-up checkups to monitor the health of both the mother and the newborn.
The Chief Executive reiterated that the primary goal of the policy is to remove the financial anxiety often tied to pregnancy.
“Simple lamang ang ating layunin. Nais nating matiyak na ang bawat ina ay makakapanganak ng ligtas at hindi nag-aalala kung saan kukuha ng pambayad.”
