President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated on Tuesday that the Philippines will resolutely defend its territorial integrity and national dignity while remaining committed to diplomacy and peaceful international relations.
The Chief Executive’s remarks follow recent incidents with China, including reports of a Philippine Navy officer being assaulted near Ayungin Shoal and the circulation of a Chinese state media AI-generated video depicting Filipinos as “monkeys.”
While Marcos did not explicitly name China, his speech reinforced the administration’s policy of defending the West Philippine Sea without escalating conflict.
Delivering his address at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) change of command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, Marcos underlined that foreign partnerships would not sacrifice domestic sovereignty.
“We seek cooperation, but we will never compromise our sovereignty. We extend friendship to all, but we will never abandon our national dignity,” the President said.
“That has always been the Filipino way, and that will always be our course.”
Marcos emphasized the nation’s steadfast dedication to regional stability and global legal norms.
“The Philippines has always been, and will always remain, a nation that seeks peace,” Marcos said.
“We adhere to international law. We are a respectful nation that conducts itself with dignity, restraint, and compassion.”
The event marked the formal turnover of military leadership from retiring Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. to Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, who takes over as the 61st AFP chief of staff.
Marcos lauded Brawner for being the first military chief to complete the full three-year fixed term under Republic Act No. 11939.
He lauded Brawner’s efforts in modernizing the military, dismantling internal threat groups, enhancing foreign defense alliances, and maintaining a firm presence in disputed maritime waters.
The President expressed confidence in Nafarrete—a former Philippine Army chief from PMA Class of 1990—to build upon these security gains.
“As your Commander-in-Chief, I assure you that this administration will continue to invest in the capabilities, readiness, and welfare of our Armed Forces,” Marcos said.
Marcos reminded the new military chief of the solemn duty attached to his new role.
“The command entrusted to you is great, but the purpose is even greater—to safeguard our people, defend every inch of our land and waters, and secure the future of our Republic.”
