The Philippines and Nigeria are positioned to unlock vast opportunities for economic collaboration as bilateral ties continue to expand, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said after officially receiving the credentials of Nigeria’s new ambassador.
During a ceremony at Malacañang Palace on Tuesday, September 1, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas presented his Letter of Credence to the President, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment in Manila.
In welcoming the envoy, President Marcos highlighted key economic sectors where both nations can build stronger partnerships.
“The Philippines and Nigeria have significant potential to expand cooperation especially in energy security, trade and investment, and pursue initiatives that would mutually benefit our peoples and our countries,” Marcos stated.
“There are many things that, in my view, we can explore and develop. There are so many opportunities that will be of mutual benefit to both our countries,” the President added.
“During your tenure as Ambassador, I look forward to further strengthening bilateral relations between our two countries,” Marcos noted.
The Chief Executive expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Ambassador Ibas to further enhance a partnership spanning 64 years.
Ambassador Ibas pledged his commitment to deepening the warm and enduring relationship between the two nations during his diplomatic posting.
The credential presentation was attended by the ambassador’s spouse alongside Nigerian Embassy personnel. High-ranking Philippine officials present included Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Germinia Aguilar-Usudan, and Deputy Chief of Presidential Protocol Dennis Briones.
Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Nigeria were formally established on August 1, 1962, setting the stage for their upcoming 65th anniversary celebration in 2027.
