President Santiago Peña Palacios of the Republic of Paraguay is scheduled to arrive in Manila on Monday, May 11, for an official visit, marking the first-ever presidential trip between the two nations since diplomatic ties were established in 1962.
At the invitation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Paraguayan leader will be received with full military honors at Malacañang Palace.
The visit is viewed as a significant milestone in the six-decade relationship between Asunción and Manila, which has historically seen limited high-level engagement.
During the visit, the two heads of state will convene for bilateral talks focused on unlocking the “untapped potential” of their economic partnership. Key areas of discussion are expected to include trade, investment, and agriculture, as both nations look to bolster mutual development and food security.
“The visit marks a significant milestone in the deepening of Philippines-Paraguay bilateral relations as it will be the first presidential visit between the two countries, building on a history of constructive engagement and high-level exchanges over the past animo decades,” the Presidential Communications Office stated.
The mission aligns with the Marcos administration’s broader foreign policy goal of diversifying the Philippines’ global partnerships. By reaching out to emerging partners in Latin America like Paraguay, Manila aims to expand its diplomatic and economic footprint beyond its traditional Western and Asian allies.
Paraguay and the Philippines share common values rooted in democracy and the rule of law, and both are currently seeking to strengthen their respective roles within regional blocs—the Philippines in ASEAN and Paraguay in MERCOSUR.
