CORREGIDOR ISLAND — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), together with the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC), put their operational readiness to the test during a joint maritime security exercise off Corregidor Island on Sunday, October 18, according to an announcement made on Monday, October 19.
The bilateral drills brought together three major assets: the PCG’s BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702) and BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408), alongside the JCG large patrol vessel SHIKISHIMA (PLH-31). The training focused on simulated anti-piracy scenarios, tactical coordination, and real-time communication exchanges to better counter transnational maritime threats.
Rear Admiral Christopher Meniado, the PCG’s exercise director, emphasized that combating unlawful elements at sea requires collective international action.
“Maritime security and law enforcement against piracy are shared responsibilities among nations,” Meniado said.
The exercise also underscored the critical role of multilateral intelligence-sharing. ReCAAP ISC Executive Director Vijay Chafekar highlighted that swift data exchange is just as vital as physical response capabilities when tackling regional maritime incidents.
The joint activities wrapped up with a passing exercise (PASSEX), featuring synchronized maneuvering drills designed to maximize interoperability between the allied coast guard fleets.
