PH NAMED WORLD’S TOP RETIREMENT DESTINATION FOR 2026

The Philippines has secured the top spot as the world’s leading retirement destination for 2026, leading a global evaluation of 20 countries based on key living standards for older expatriates.

The ranking was released in the Retirement Abroad Index 2026 by Expatriate Group, an international health insurance provider operating in over 180 countries. The Philippines achieved the highest marks overall and ranked first in every single assessment category, which included healthcare quality, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, affordability, and local community integration.

This global recognition follows a previous regional honor, where the country was named the Best Retirement Destination in Asia at the 2025 TripZilla Excellence Awards.

A major driver behind the country’s appeal is the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV). Managed by the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), this flagship residency program grants qualified foreign nationals the right to live permanently in the country.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay, who oversees the state’s retirement promotion campaign, stated that the award reflects ongoing government programs to upgrade tourism infrastructure and market the country to global retirees and travelers.

She added that under the Marcos administration, the government is focusing heavily on making the country more accessible and comfortable for international visitors.

In an official statement, Angara-Mathay noted that the global top ranking:

“affirms the progress we are making in creating a more welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable experience for travelers and retirees alike.”

The Tourism Secretary also highlighted that the nation provides a high quality of life that combines economic advantages with social warmth.

“warm hospitality, affordable living, quality services, and vibrant communities that allow people to live, travel, and thrive,” Angara-Mathay said.

Moving forward, the Department of Tourism plans to strengthen its partnership with the PRA and private sectors to maintain the country’s position as a premier global hub for international retirees.
