Philippine Airlines (PAL) is slated to become the 16th member of the oneworld Alliance, a move that represents a major milestone for the national flag carrier and significantly broadens its international reach through one of the largest airline networks in the world.
Lucio Tan III, the President of PAL Holdings, described the impending membership as a transformative step forward in the airline’s history.
He emphasized that the partnership will greatly expand travel options and improve connectivity for both local and international travelers.
“Becoming a member of the oneworld Alliance and strengthening Southeast Asia’s representation within the group significantly brings the Philippines and the region closer to the world like never before,” Tan said.
The carrier revealed that it officially received its invitation to join the global network during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to PAL executives, joining the alliance fits perfectly into the airline’s long-term growth roadmap and will fortify its market presence across the Asia-Pacific region.
“PAL’s entry into oneworld supports our long-term strategic growth and strengthens our connectivity across key markets in the Asia Pacific region,” said Robert Isom, Chairman of the oneworld Governing Board and Chief Executive Officer of American Airlines.
Once PAL is fully integrated into the network, passengers will gain access to a more seamless travel ecosystem, including entry into premium airport lounges worldwide.
Additionally, members of the airline’s Mabuhay Miles program will be able to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles across flights operated by all other oneworld carriers.
Oneworld is a premier global airline alliance that currently counts Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines among its roster.
The addition of PAL broadens the alliance’s operational footprint in Southeast Asia, offering global travelers enhanced connectivity and broader access to various international destinations.
