The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the United States on Sunday, August 30, highlighting the pact’s central role in regional security and bilateral cooperation.
Originally signed in Washington, D.C., on August 30, 1951, the MDT establishes a collective defense framework requiring both nations to respond jointly if either comes under attack in the Pacific region.
Over the past seven decades, the agreement has broadened from basic defense support to encompass maritime security, joint military exercises, capability enhancements, and disaster response operations.
DND spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arsenio Andolong noted that the treaty remains vital to preserving peace across the Indo-Pacific while adapting to modern security challenges:
“As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Philippines-United States Mutual Defense Treaty, we honor an alliance that has endured through generations and has evolved to meet the demands of an increasingly complex security environment,” Andolong said.
“The strength of our alliance is evident in the success, sophistication, and growing scope of our bilateral and multilateral exercises, engagements, and people-to-people exchanges,” he added. “As we look to the future, we remain committed to building a more sustainable, agile, and productive partnership anchored on mutual respect, shared interests, and adherence to international law.”
AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad underscored that the alliance continues to reinforce the operational readiness of Filipino troops amid ongoing regional maritime disputes:
“For seven decades, the MDT has provided a framework for sustained cooperation between the two countries, strengthening interoperability, enhancing defense capabilities, and contributing to peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region,” Trinidad stated.
