Additional police forces have been ordered to deploy around the Senate complex as law enforcement braces for potential public protests sparked by ongoing friction between majority and minority lawmakers.
The security upgrade follows mounting calls for the resignation of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano, raising concerns among authorities that larger crowds and advocacy groups may assemble near the legislative building to demonstrate.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and local stations to enforce stricter security protocols at the Senate’s main entrance, its perimeter, and adjacent government buildings.
”Our current posture around the Senate is one of heightened vigilance but calibrated restraint. Our deployment is strictly precautionary and proactive,” Nartatez said.
As political developments fuel intense public debate and increase the likelihood of rallies, the PNP chief instructed the NCRPO to boost police visibility and set up strategic checkpoints near the Senate grounds. Nartatez clarified that the reinforced presence aims to safeguard the public while keeping government functions running smoothly.
”The PNP remains entirely apolitical. Our sole mandate here is to maintain public order, manage traffic flow, and ensure that the Senate can conduct its vital legislative functions without any external disruption,” he said.
Alongside heightened patrols, the PNP is collaborating with Senate security, local government units, and traffic personnel to build a unified strategy for areas vulnerable to traffic or congestion from public gatherings.
Units are also conducting ongoing intelligence monitoring and threat assessments to preempt security risks while upholding the citizens’ right to peaceful assembly.
Meanwhile, Nartatez called on rally organizers to maintain order during their demonstrations.
”We appeal to the organizers of these planned rallies to keep their activities peaceful and orderly. Do not allow your ranks to be infiltrated by provocateurs,” he said.
The PNP chief reassured the public that the personnel on the ground are tasked with shielding both the demonstrators and the state infrastructure.
”Our police officers are on the ground not to suppress your voices but to protect lives and property. Any act of violence or vandalism will be dealt with immediately and strictly under the law,” Nartatez added.
