PNP DEMANDS STRICT GUN REGULATION COMPLIANCE AMID HIGH-PROFILE SCRUTINY

The Philippine National Police (PNP) issued a stern reminder to all firearm holders to strictly follow gun ownership laws, following intense public scrutiny over the weapons declarations of several high-ranking government officials.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. underscored that holding a firearm is a legal privilege rather than an absolute right, warning that permits can be cancelled if owners fail to meet state requirements.

He explained that this enforcement push is part of the police force’s commitment to accountability and strict arms regulation.

“The Philippine National Police reminds all firearm owners that ownership of firearms is a regulated privilege under the law. Every firearm must be properly licensed, registered, and regularly renewed with the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office,” Nartatez said.

The top cop urged gun owners to remain diligent regarding their paperwork, lawful possession, and the secure storage of their weapons.

“We urge strict compliance with all requirements on safe storage, documentation, and lawful possession. Transparency in firearm ownership is essential not only for accountability but also for public safety,” he added.

This compliance directive comes in the wake of allegations from Bicol Saro Party-list Representative Terry Ridon, who claimed that multiple firearms allegedly owned by Vice President Sara Duterte and her spouse were omitted from her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).

Concurrently, Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has reportedly not yet surrendered over 90 firearms registered to his name after the PNP revoked all of his gun permits. Records show that only 20 of those weapons have been turned over to the authorities so far.

Nartatez clarified that the PNP’s directive applies universally to all gun holders across the country, independent of their social or political standing.

He reiterated that responsible ownership goes beyond initial registration to include proper daily safekeeping.

Furthermore, the PNP chief cautioned that keeping unlicensed or undocumented weapons could result in heavy administrative penalties and criminal prosecution under current Philippine laws.

“Regardless of status or position, all gun owners are subject to the same rules. The PNP enforces firearm laws equally and without exception,” said Nartatez.
