Law enforcement authorities have been directed to scale up market surveillance and keep a close eye on emerging peace and order issues. The directive aims to deter opportunistic crimes that could jeopardize public safety as the Philippine peso continues its decline against the US dollar.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that police units have been instructed to respond swiftly to verified reports of robbery, theft, fraud, and other illegal acts.
This proactive stance is designed to prevent bad actors from exploiting public anxieties tied to economic shifts.
“The PNP actively monitors street-level crime trends to prevent opportunistic offenses driven by financial strain. We are tightening intelligence and community patrols in vulnerable areas to protect consumers and small business owners from economic-related crimes like theft or scams,” Nartatez said.
The Philippine peso recently slid to a historic low of ₱64.17 against the US dollar, sparking widespread public conversations regarding its potential trickle-down effects on household budgets and the cost of imported commodities.
Despite these macro-level financial pressures, Nartatez assured the public that police forces remain entirely dedicated to shielding everyday consumers, working citizens, and micro-entrepreneurs from criminal exploitation.
“While economic fluctuations are managed by our financial authorities, the PNP actively monitors street-level crime trends to prevent opportunistic offenses driven by financial strain,” Nartatez noted.
“We are tightening intelligence and community patrols in vulnerable areas to protect consumers and small business owners from economic-related crimes like theft or scams,” he added.
Reiterating the force’s commitment, the PNP chief emphasized that law enforcement units remain on high alert to secure communities and safeguard key commercial sectors.
“Economic challenges require law and order resilience, and the PNP stands firm as a reliable pillar of stability for every Filipino family. We remain steadfast in safeguarding our markets, securing food supply chains against illegal syndicates, and keeping our communities peaceful and orderly,” he concluded.
