PNP’S ‘SAFER CITIES’ SPURS 16% DROP IN NATIONWIDE CRIME RATE

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a nearly 16% decline in nationwide crime rates during the first 43 days of implementing its “Safer Cities” initiative, signaling early success for the newly launched anti-crime campaign.

Data released on Sunday revealed that a total of 3,776 focus crimes were documented from April 6—the campaign’s launch date—until May 18. This represents a significant reduction of 719 cases, or a 15.99% decrease, compared to the 4,495 offenses logged during the preceding period from February 22 to April 5.

The downward trend spanned across all eight focus crimes, which include murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, and the carnapping of both motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Leading the decline were rape cases, which plunged by 30.61%, followed closely by motor vehicle carnapping with a 28.2% drop. Notable decreases were also recorded in physical injuries (25.93%), robbery (15.12%), and theft (10.61%). Motorcycle theft, homicide, and murder likewise saw reductions of 6.64%, 5%, and 2.17%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the National Capital Region (NCR) mirrored the positive momentum, posting an 8.57% decrease in focus crimes during the identical monitoring timeframe.

The PNP credited the breakthrough to a combination of proactive policing strategies, intelligence-driven operations, targeted personnel deployment, and strengthened partnerships with local government units and community stakeholders.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that the initial milestones of the initiative underscore the power of a highly visible and responsive police force in urban hubs and neighborhoods.

“Ang pagbaba ng focus crimes ay bunga ng mas pinaigting na police presence, mabilis na responde, at pakikipagtulungan ng iba’t ibang sektor sa ating kapulisan. Patuloy nating palalakasin ang ating mga hakbang upang mapanatili ang kaayusan at kaligtasan ng mamamayan (The drop in focus crimes is the result of intensified police presence, quick response, and the cooperation of various sectors with our police force. We will continue to strengthen our measures to maintain order and the safety of the citizens),” Nartatez said in a statement.
