A diverse coalition of sectoral organizations has kicked off a nationwide movement calling on Senator Risa Hontiveros to seek the presidency in the 2028 elections.
Allied groups, including Akbayan and Magdalo, assembled at the UP Bahay ng Alumni in Quezon City to officially debut the “Risa Na!” Movement, an initiative designed to mobilize public support for the senator’s potential presidential run.
Akbayan President Rafaela David highlighted Hontiveros’ strong legislative performance as the primary reason for their endorsement, pointing to her critical contributions to landmark legislation such as the Expanded Maternity Leave Law, the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, and the Mental Health Act.
David explained that the coalition views a Hontiveros presidency as a vital shield against the potential resurgence of extrajudicial killings and as a solution to ongoing corruption issues, particularly those surrounding flood control initiatives.
She noted that coalition leaders have initiated talks with Hontiveros, who indicated she is open to the idea but stressed the importance of thorough preparation and building a cohesive political alliance before 2028.
Former Magdalo Party-list Representative Gary Alejano revealed that Hontiveros was selected following an internal vetting process, praising her as a courageous, principled, and uncorrupted public servant.
Alejano urged supporters to broaden the movement’s footprint, adding that Magdalo has formally submitted its endorsement to the senator, who welcomed their support.
The event was also attended by former Budget Secretary Butch Abad of the Liberal Party, who affirmed Hontiveros’ strong relationship with the party and praised her integrity and dedication.
Abad recommended that the senator declare her political intentions for 2028 ahead of time.
In a recorded video message, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV stated that Magdalo stands behind Hontiveros because of her unwavering advocacy for labor forces, women, the LGBTQ+ community, and other marginalized demographics. Delegates from farming, academic, youth, and labor sectors likewise voiced their commitment to her potential candidacy.
Hontiveros has previously maintained that she remains receptive to running for either president or vice president in 2028, provided it aligns with the collective strategy of a unified opposition.
