Several senators have filed resolutions commending Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala after her historic victory at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open, where she became the first Filipino to win a WTA Tour-level singles title.
Senate Deputy Majority Leader Joel Villanueva authored Senate Resolution No. 554 honoring Eala’s title run at the WTA 500 event in Washington, D.C., calling it a major milestone for Philippine sports. Senators Bam Aquino, Mark Villar, and Erwin Tulfo also submitted Senate Resolutions 560, 564, and 565, respectively.
Villanueva described the victory as “one of the greatest achievements in the history of Philippine sports.” Eala captured the title by defeating World No. 3 and top seed Jessica Pegula in the final, securing her biggest career professional title and propelling her into the WTA singles Top 20—another first for a Filipino player.
Her path to the championship included victories over four Top 10 opponents: reigning Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending DC Open champion Leylah Fernandez, former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina, and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, before defeating Pegula. Villanueva noted that her achievement follows her historic 2022 US Open junior singles title, proving the excellence, resilience, and world-class potential of Filipino athletes.
Senators used the moment to call for greater support for local sports. Aquino emphasized that Eala’s breakthrough demonstrates the need to expand national investments in sports development.
“Eala’s talent, hard work, discipline, and perseverance, culminating in this remarkable achievement, serve as an inspiration to young Filipinos to pursue their dreams with determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment,” Aquino stressed.
Villar praised Eala’s dedication and character both on and off the court, viewing her victory as the beginning of an even greater career chapter.
“Vamos, Alex! Ang tagumpay mo ay patunay na world-class ang atletang Pilipino. Isa ka nang kampeon, ngunit naniniwala akong marami ka pang maaabot. Pag lumago, hindi na hihinto. Patuloy kang mangarap, magsikap, at ipagmalaki ang Pilipinas sa bawat laban,” Villar said.
Tulfo and Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan added that Eala’s landmark win should inspire young Filipinos while highlighting the urgent need for enhanced support for grassroots sports programs and international competition exposure.
