SENATE RE-SHUFFLES COMMITTEE CHAIRS: CAYETANO RETURNS TO BLUE RRIBBON REPLACING LACSON

The Senate finalized a major leadership reshuffle on Wednesday, May 20, electing Senator Pia Cayetano as the chairperson of the powerful Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

Cayetano takes over the post from Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who leaves behind an unfinished investigation into the nation’s controversial flood control scandal. This marks a return to a familiar role for Cayetano, who first made history on January 22, 2024, as the first woman to lead the accountability panel.

During her 2024 tenure, Cayetano steered the committee through high-profile probes, highlighting the panel’s crackdown on the proliferation of falsified government documents and stricter scrutiny over tobacco product regulations.

Under her previous leadership, the committee exposed systemic fraud involving fake birth certificates, passports, and other government-issued identifications that were being illegally acquired and utilized by foreign nationals.

Alongside Cayetano’s appointment, the Senate announced several other key committee assignments:

  • Committee on Foreign Relations: Senator Imee Marcos reclaims the chairmanship, succeeding Senator Erwin Tulfo.
  • Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change: Senator Camille Villar retains her leadership post.
  • Committee on Government Corporations and Public Enterprises: Senator Camille Villar will concurrently head this panel.
  • Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes: Senator Robin Padilla secures another term as committee chair.
