SENATOR MARK VILLAR APPOINTED AS NEW SENATE FINANCE CHAIR

Senator Mark Villar was formally designated on Tuesday as the new chairperson of the powerful Senate Committee on Finance, a key panel tasked with overseeing the government’s annual national budget.

The low-profile lawmaker assumed the post during the Senate’s regular plenary session, succeeding Senator Win Gatchalian. Gatchalian had previously earned commendations for implementing institutional reforms during the recent deliberations on the 2026 national budget.

The developments followed reports that Villar turned down an initial offer from Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano to serve as Senate Majority Leader. The position would have thrust him into the chamber’s rigorous daily political debates and floor management duties.

Insiders revealed that Villar politely declined the leadership role to avoid the demanding responsibilities of acting as the chamber’s “traffic enforcer” during plenary sessions. He opted instead for the finance committee chairmanship, which remains one of the most influential positions in the 24-member chamber due to its oversight of the proposed General Appropriations Act.

Prior to offering the majority leader post to Villar, Cayetano had reportedly approached Senator JV Ejercito for the role. Ejercito, however, declined to join the majority bloc and instead chose to align himself with the minority group led by Senate Minority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
