Efi Kalogirou, the estranged wife of Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin, has publicly accused Ateneo de Manila University of disregarding past warnings she made regarding the safety of student-athletes under his supervision.
Her statement follows Baldwin’s recent public apology, in which he accepted responsibility for his leadership following the tragic deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
In a video statement released by her legal team, Kalogirou claimed that her efforts to raise concerns in previous years were met with hostility rather than action from the university administration.
“At the time, I repeatedly told the Ateneo University that children are not safe around him. The university campus, and they proceeded to launch a campaign of intimidation and silencing,” Kalogirou stated.
Kalogirou, who has been married to Baldwin since 2011, noted that she separated from the coach in 2020 to ensure the protection of herself and their children.
“Hello, my name is Efi and I have been married to Tom Baldwin since 2011. I’m officially still married to him. However, in early 2020, I had to flee away from Tab for the sake of myself and my kids to keep us safe,” she explained.
She emphasized that she felt compelled to speak out publicly to clarify that Baldwin does not represent her views or the interests of their family.
Addressing the loss of the two students, Kalogirou criticized Baldwin’s recent comments regarding moving forward.
“For Rovelyn and Elias, the deaths of your kids were not only predictable, but preventable. The bodies of your kids are still warm. And he’s talking about moving on. That’s terrible,” she said.
She further called for a deeper investigation into why Baldwin remained in a position of authority over youth athletes despite the history of her warnings.
“I urge the Filipinos and the police there to keep asking why he was still allowed around children in spite of these warnings,” she added.
The situation gained further attention on Saturday, June 13, when Giota Kalogirou, Efi’s daughter, shared her own account on social media.
She tagged Ateneo Men’s Basketball team manager Epok Quimpo in a post, alleging that he had mocked her mother when she previously cautioned that Baldwin posed a danger to students.
As of this report, Ateneo de Manila University has yet to provide a formal response to these serious allegations.
