The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has reiterated its backing for the return of the traditional June-to-March school calendar, emphasizing that it offers a more suitable learning climate and better matches the country’s weather patterns.
Speaking on a radio program regarding the upcoming school opening, TDC National Chairman Benjo Basas expressed approval of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) initiative to phasedly revert to the pre-pandemic timeline.
Basas pointed out that the coalition has consistently pushed for the June-to-March schedule, referencing data and expert testimonies shared during congressional inquiries.
“Kahit sa mga scientist, yung during the congressional hearings, lumalabas naman po, mas endurable yung ulan kesa yung matinding init ng April at Mayo sa classroom,” Basas stated.
He elaborated that while both heavy rains and extreme heat present unique obstacles, enduring intense summer heat in April and May inside classrooms is significantly more taxing for both learners and educators than managing the rainy season. Furthermore, Basas noted that the traditional schedule respects cultural and religious traditions, as major local festivals and Holy Week typically fall within March and April.
The transition back is official under DepEd Order No. 9, Series of 2026. The upcoming School Year 2026–2027 is set to launch on June 8, 2026, and wrap up on April 8, 2027.
According to DepEd, the updated calendar will feature a three-term setup aimed at optimizing class hours, streamlining school events, and reinforcing the Academic Recovery for Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program.
