MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. has called on former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to hand over evidence supporting his claims that Chinese funding was funneled to organizations tied to the Duterte family.
Teodoro issued the remark after being asked to comment on Trillanes’ allegations that funds from China were channeled to the Tapang at Malasakit Alliance to advance the political careers of Vice President Sara Duterte and her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte.
“The allegations of Fmr. Senator Trillanes, if substantiated, raise serious implications for national security,” Teodoro said in a statement sent to Malacañang.
The defense chief emphasized that any proof should be turned over to law enforcement agencies to facilitate a formal inquiry.
“He should submit the evidence in his possession, if any, to our law enforcement authorities so the matter can be thoroughly investigated,” Teodoro said.
Trillanes previously claimed that Chinese sources provided financial support to entities associated with the Dutertes, citing financial records and documents that he said validate his statements. However, relevant authorities have yet to independently verify these assertions.
The Duterte camp has firmly rejected the allegations. Atty. Paolo Panelo, spokesperson for Vice President Sara Duterte, dismissed the claims as fabricated and raised questions over why Trillanes did not present the alleged proof under oath during the impeachment proceedings.
