Typhoon Domeng is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by June 1, but it will continue to intensify the southwest monsoon or habagat, which is forecast to bring rains across western sections of the country over the next several days, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 3 a.m. on Sunday, PAGASA reported that the center of Domeng was located approximately 670 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes. The typhoon was carrying maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near its center and gusts reaching up to 150 kph while moving north-northwestward at 20 kph.
Although the cyclone is expected to move out of PAR, PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said its influence on the southwest monsoon will continue to trigger rainfall in several areas, particularly in the western portion of the country.
Residents in locations that have already experienced significant rainfall were advised to remain vigilant against possible flooding and landslides.
On Sunday, the trough of Domeng continued to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Central Luzon, Cagayan, and Isabela. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon affected Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
For June 1, PAGASA forecasts rains over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Negros Island Region due to the enhanced habagat. Similar weather conditions are expected on June 2 across Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Negros Island Region.
From June 3 to June 4, the southwest monsoon is expected to continue affecting fewer areas, with rains likely over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa.
“Dahil mahaba yung range ng ating nabanggit, may tsansa itong magbago kaya patuloy pa rin tayong mag-antabay sa mga susunod na update ng PAGASA,” Torres said.
PAGASA also warned of rough sea conditions in several coastal areas as the enhanced southwest monsoon continues to influence the country’s weather.
Wave heights of up to 3.5 meters are expected along the seaboard of Batanes and the eastern coastlines of the Babuyan Islands and mainland Cagayan. Seas of up to 3.0 meters may also affect the seaboard of Isabela and the northern coast of the Babuyan Islands.
Small vessel operators, including those using motor bancas, were advised against sailing under these conditions, particularly if they are inexperienced or operating poorly equipped boats.
Moderate to rough seas with wave heights ranging from 2.0 to 2.5 meters are likewise expected over the remaining seaboards of Cagayan, Aurora, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Northern Samar, Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, and Davao Oriental. Mariners in these areas were urged to exercise caution while at sea.
