The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Board has formally approved Ateneo de Manila University’s request for additional time to present its official report regarding the tragic June 8 team-building incident in Dipaculao, Aurora.
The devastating event, which claimed the lives of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, has sparked a thorough internal probe, prompting the league to push back the submission deadline from July 15 to July 24.
In a formal announcement explaining the timeline adjustment, the UAAP emphasized that the extension is crucial to guarantee a comprehensive investigation by the university.
“Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to complete its internal investigation and submit its report. The UAAP Board approved the request during its meeting,” the association stated.
The board made it clear that granting the extension does not signal a pause in its disciplinary measures. All previously instituted preventive sanctions—specifically the suspension of the involved Ateneo coaching staff from participating in any UAAP-related activities—remain strictly in effect.
Furthermore, the league stressed that establishing accountability is a multi-layered process.
“Any determination of accountability will be based on the findings of the appropriate government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP, in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations,” the board noted.
This administrative delay occurs amid intensifying legal pressure. On July 13, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) formally submitted its findings to the Department of Justice, recommending that criminal charges be filed against former head coach Tab Baldwin, 11 other individuals, and staff members of the Aurora resort where the tragedy took place.
This development follows an earlier recommendation by the Philippine National Police (PNP) seeking the prosecution of Ateneo officials linked to the fatal event.
