Driven by an insatiable global appetite for artificial intelligence infrastructure, South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix officially crossed the $1 trillion market capitalization threshold on Wednesday.
The achievement follows hot on the heels of rival Samsung Electronics, which breached the same valuation earlier this month. The twin milestones underscore the explosive, multi-billion-dollar expansion of the global semiconductor sector as tech giants race to build advanced AI systems.
SK hynix saw its shares surge over 11 percent in afternoon trading, fueled by aggressive investor interest in AI-related hardware. The company holds a critical position in the global supply chain as a primary provider of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips to Nvidia, whose processors serve as the backbone for modern AI data centers.
With this surge, SK hynix joins an elite trio of Asian tech titans valued above $1 trillion, a club that includes Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
The valuation boom reflects immense global capital flight into AI infrastructure. Tech firms and governments worldwide are pouring vast resources into specialized data centers to train and run heavy AI models, such as image generators and large language model chatbots.
This hardware race has yielded massive windfalls; in April, SK hynix reported a staggering 400 percent jump in first-quarter net profits, shrugging off broader macroeconomic anxieties regarding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The semiconductor windfall is also transforming corporate culture and labor dynamics within South Korea. On Wednesday, Samsung employees approved a new management agreement securing projected individual bonuses of roughly $370,000 this year. The labor negotiations were heavily influenced by the chip wars, with Samsung’s union highlighting that SK hynix workers had pocketed bonuses more than three times larger than their Samsung counterparts during the previous fiscal year.
The immense wealth flowing into the sector has even shifted local pop culture, elevating the social status of tech engineers.
Recently, an everyday corporate jacket branded with the SK hynix logo went viral on social media, with netizens jokingly elevating the uniform into a high-status symbol of luxury, affluence, and ultimate career triumph.
