ALEX EALA AND SHAIRA RIVERA EXIT ASIAN GAMES DOUBLES AFTER LOSS TO CHINA

AICHI, Japan — Operating on minimal rest, Alex Eala pushed her limits as she and doubles partner Shaira Rivera fell short against China’s seasoned duo Xinyu Jiang and Zhaoxuan Yang, 5-7, 2-6, in the second round of the 20th Asian Games on Tuesday, September 30.

The loss came just hours after the 21-year-old Eala endured a grueling, nearly two-hour singles clash against Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland.

Despite the fatigue, Eala and Rivera mounted a fierce comeback in the opening set, rallying from a 2-5 deficit to level the score at 5-5.

However, the Chinese veterans reclaimed control of the match by capitalizing on superior serving and returning over the next two games, taking the opening set before carrying that dominance into the second.

Statistical advantages played a critical role in the outcome, with Jiang and Yang breaking serve seven times compared to just three successful break points from the Philippine pair.

The victory advances Team China into the quarterfinals, where they will square off against Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Yuliya Putintseva, who advanced after securing a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, (10-6) win over Thailand in an earlier match.

Despite the doubles exit, Eala’s campaign in Japan continues. The tournament’s top-seeded singles player, currently ranked No. 18, turns her attention to an upcoming semifinal matchup against China’s Xiyu Wang, with the match schedule to be announced shortly.
