Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala’s French Open campaign came to an abrupt end on Tuesday following a straight-sets, 4-6, 2-6 loss to America’s Iva Jovic.
Despite a brief late-set resurgence from Eala in the opening frame, the 17th-seeded Jovic proved too dominant, wrapping up the first-round encounter in just one hour and 14 minutes.
The contest opened with an intense, nearly ten-minute battle in the very first game before Jovic managed to hold serve for an early 1-0 lead.
Riding that initial momentum, the American quickly seized control of the court. Jovic dictated the pace with a flurry of powerful forehand winners that left Eala searching for answers, rapidly building a commanding 5-1 cushion.
Just as the opening set seemed out of reach, Eala found an opening. Struggling with her composure, Jovic committed three double faults, allowing the Filipina to capitalize on the errors. Eala successfully locked in to claim three consecutive games, narrowing the deficit to 4-5.
However, Jovic quickly steadied her nerves, breaking Eala’s serve without dropping a single point to secure the first set, 6-4.
Eala looked to turn the tide early in the second set, securing an immediate break to lead 1-0. Her advantage was short-lived, as Jovic fired right back with a counter-break to even the score before holding her own serve to pull ahead 2-1.
The American refused to relinquish her grip on the match from that point forward, cruising through the remaining games to seal the victory and book her spot in the second round, where a matchup against Emma Navarro awaits.
