WUHAN, CHINA — Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala makes her highly anticipated return to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour on Monday, October 12, facing Chinese qualifier Han Shi in the opening round of the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open.
Fresh off a successful bronze-medal campaign at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, the 21-year-old Eala enters the tournament aiming to bounce back from a tough semifinal loss.
World No. 19 Eala is set to square off against the 231st-ranked Shi at 8:40 p.m., though schedule adjustments may occur depending on earlier matches and weather conditions.
This opening-round encounter marks the first professional meeting between the two players. The victor of this Round of 64 clash will advance to face either freshly crowned Singapore Open champion Leylah Fernandez or Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Round of 32.
Eala enters this tournament following a brief hiatus that included a stylish appearance at Paris Fashion Week and an engaging conversation with her childhood idol, Maria Sharapova, on the “Pretty Tough” podcast.
Her participation in Wuhan also follows confirmation from Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) executive director Tonette Mendoza, who stated during a recent Senate hearing that Eala cleared all sanctions regarding her choice to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games over the China Open.
